Your First Visit

What should I bring to my appointment?

  • Your referral
  • Current list of medications and allergies
  • Your current pair of glasses
  • Medicare Card
  • Pension Card (if applicable)
  • DVA Card (if applicable)
  • Health Fund Card (if applicable)

How long will my appointment take?

Please allow between 1 – 2 hours for your appointment. This time may vary depending on your results and the tests that may be required on the day.

Ophthalmic Associates also fit in emergency patients when required, which may extend the duration of your appointment.

What will happen at my appointment?

First, you will see the administration team, who will set up a digital medical file for you. After this, you will be screened by our clinical team. The clinician will perform a few tests, and drops may be placed in your eye. You will then be called in to see the doctor.

Will I be able to drive after my appointment?

Drops may be placed in your eyes that will dilate your pupils. This is done so the doctor can view the back of the eyes. Once the drops are placed in your eyes, your vision will be blurred for a few hours, which will impact your ability to drive.

We strongly recommend that you are accompanied by someone who will be able to take you home safely. If this is not possible, you should try to make alternative transport arrangements.
