Dr Will Yates is a comprehensive ophthalmologist who trained at the Sydney Eye Hospital. He completed his medical degree, Doctor of Medicine (MD) with first class honours at UNSW. Will received multiple prizes during his medical degree including the best performance in the final examinations, best performance in paediatrics and general medicine. He subsequently completed a masters of clinical epidemiology and biostatistics to ensure he could implement the highest evidence base to his ophthalmology practise.

During his ophthalmology training at Sydney Eye Hospital, he underwent rotations in Darwin, including indigenous outreach clinics, Hobart, Lismore and Port Macquarie. For his final year of training, he had the privilege to work as the Professorial Registrar (Chief Resident) for the Sydney Eye Hospital with further experience in complex cataract, uveitis, medical retina, neuro-ophthalmology, and inherited retinal diseases.
Will is currently conducting his PhD in retinal genetics and gene therapy through the University of Sydney and the Children’s Medical Research Institute (CMRI).

He has an active interest in teaching medical students, emergency departments registrars, ophthalmologist trainees, in both clinical and microsurgical skills. Will is a keen teacher of ophthalmic surgeons in-training in both intraocular and extraocular surgery.

Will is a clear communicator and plays a particular importance on ensuring that patients and their families understand their eye health before embarking on any treatment or surgical intervention.

In his spare time Will enjoys open water ocean swimming, cycling and running as well spending time with his young family.

His special interests include medical retina (including inherited retinal diseases), uveitis, cataract and pterygium surgery.
